Ryan Reynolds says hes “proud” Deadpool is R rated

It would be an understatement to say that Deadpool’s cinematic debut was met with disappointment by fans, but Ryan Reynolds is determined to make up for it with the character’s next big screen outing. The Mississippi Grind actor sat down with Total Film to talk about the cheeky anti-hero and why he’s proud the solo film is R rated.

“There’s been a lot of talk about how I was instrumental in getting it made, which isn’t true at all,” the star explained. “I wouldn’t say I spent every single day emailing the studio heads at Fox saying, ‘You’ve got to make this movie.'”

“The fans are the ones that saw that leaked test footage – which really was never meant for anyone besides in-house studio people. That’s really what got it made,” he continued. “But what I’m most proud of is we got to make the movie in the way it should have been made, which is rated R at a very modest budget.”

With Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Captain America: Civil War and X-Men: Apocalypse hitting cinemas a month or so after Deadpool, is the star intimidated? Of course not. “I mean, Deadpool’s greatest superpower is annoying the shit out of people,” says Reynolds. “So I imagine that he would spark a heavy wave of ire from any one of those groups”.

Deadpool hits the UK on February 5 2016 and the US on February 12 2016, but you can catch Ryan Reynolds next in Mississippi Grind out in the UK on October 23. Read Total Film’s interview with Ryan Reynolds in full in the November issue, on sale now.
