New Doom goes old-school with secret retro-style levels

The new Doom (opens in new tab) is an homage to the old-school original in more than just its fast movement and outlandish weaponry. Developer id Software is also inserting snippets of levels from Doom and Doom 2 as secrets for players to find, one of which they revealed during a playthrough with IGN. Skip to 1:30 to see the secret level in action, and prepare for a wave of nostalgia:

This isn’t the first time a Bethesda-published FPS has done this. Wolfenstein: The New Order likewise featured levels cut from Wolfenstein 3D, for example. Everything is still running in the modern game’s engine, but enemy placements, type, and in some instances music are all from the classic games. Once you’ve found these mini-throwbacks, you’ll be able to play the whole level from the game’s main menu.

Neat! It’s like, Bethesda and id Software knew that you like Doom, so they put Doom in your Doom, so you can Doom while you Doom!
