Red Light Revolution review

PRESUMABLY THE FIRST EVER Mandarin sex-shop comedy to gain UK cinema distribution, this anodyne triumph-of-the-underdog tale centres on everyman Shunzi (Zhao Jun) who, having lost his job and been dumped by his wife, sets up a store selling erotic aids.

However, his Japanese investor wants 80 per cent of the profits, and the local communist official wants to close him down. Written/directed by the Aussie-born, Beijing-residing Sam Voutas, it’s light-hearted rather than provocative, though the gag about the elderly customers’ love-making stamina is a bit of a flop.
