Portal in augmented reality almost makes the $3,000 HoloLens worth it

You thought virtual reality was expensive, what with the $800 HTC Vive, $600 Oculus Rift, and $400 PlayStation VR? Try augmented reality courtesy of Microsoft’s HoloLens (opens in new tab) – dev kits of these puppies will set you back a whopping $3,000! And it’d almost be worth it too, judging by this awe-inspiring video:

It’s seriously impressive technology, and developer Kenny Wang is obviously gifted. Last year, he created what is basically Pokemon Go on steroids with PokeLens:

The downsides are, unless your house has moving floors and a psychotic artificial intelligence running things, the Portal augmented reality experience is more of a neat trick than a game. It’s also important to remember that HoloLens does not cover your natural field of view, instead limiting the area you can see a hologram to about the size of a playing card held at arm’s length (opens in new tab).

Like I said: almost worth it.
