Pokemon Shuffle will match up with iOS and Android later this year

Pokemon Shuffle, the free-to-play puzzler that lets you slide Pikachus around for massive damage, is headed to mobile devices. Pokemon Shuffle Mobile will release on iOS and Android later this year.

Pokemon Shuffle already has a pretty nice headstart, as the 3DS version has been downloaded more than 4.5 million times since it released in February. It looks like Pokemon Shuffle Mobile will play pretty much the same as its 3DS counterpart, letting players form teams of Pokemon to battle (and potentially capture) more pocket monsters through match-3 battles. Think Puzzle & Dragons, but with cheerful Chespin faces instead of little power gems, and you’re most of the way there.

Note that this doesn’t seem to be part of Nintendo’s deal with DeNA to make mobile games (opens in new tab). The Pokemon Company (which operates with some autonomy from Nintendo) has already made a few apps, such as the Pokemon Trading Card Game Online, but this will be the first time it’s brought a handheld title over.
