The future for No Man’s Sky (opens in new tab) is bright. Players have already made some amazing discoveries (opens in new tab), and the day-one patch (opens in new tab) shows that Hello Games isn’t resting on their laurels when it comes to adding in content. And according to studio head Sean Murray, any future efforts will come to players free of charge.
“We do want to add a ton of features, like we’ve just discussed: Freighters, bases, these type of things. But we want to do it for free,” Murray said in a recent interview with Red Bull (opens in new tab). “You’ve paid for the game, so you should get this stuff without paying even more money. So no, there will be no paid DLC, just patches.”
It’s an attitude that calls to mind developers like CD Projekt RED, the force behind The Witcher series. When discussing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (opens in new tab)’s embrace of free DLC, studio co-founder Marcin Iwinski said that he hoped the practice would become an “industry standard” (opens in new tab). With another high-profile game giving players more content for free, we’re one step closer to achieving that standard.
