“Ancient” Oculus Rift concepts leak new controller and front-facing camera

A series of images discovered by _explogeek (opens in new tab) on Reddit might just have revealed the new Oculus Rift virtual reality headset in all its wireless glory, with an interesting new touch controller.

Coincidentally, the Oculus website (opens in new tab) is currently counting down to a big reveal but the following images were taken from a link on the Oculus website to a guide image which has now disappeared.

It was clearly a work in progress. There was placeholder text, some more or less fictitious PC spec requirements and a few missing key words, along with copyright date of ‘2014’. So it clearly wasn’t a finished page but that camera, stand and controller are all new. Oculus Rift founder Palmer Luckey has commented on Reddit (opens in new tab) since the images were found, saying “This is an old placeholder concept image that we accidentally leaked,” he says. “Everything in it is ancient, certainly nowhere close to final (as evidenced by the GPU specs and the game named “war”) Enjoy checking it out, at this point, but don’t expect everything to carry through to the stream on the 11th.” It will be very be interesting to see how much of this actually makes it over to the upcoming reveal.

You can see on the bottom right a new controller with what looks like a touch wheel. How very Steam controller…. Also interesting is that an image below shows the headset with a front facing camera. This could either improve head tracking or perhaps give you a view of the world that means you aren’t fully blind when wearing the headset. See more images taken from the guide below.
