Star Wars: Rogue One Godzilla Easter egg

The true monsters of Star Wars: Rogue One (opens in new tab) are the Empire, as you would expect, but keen-eyed viewers could notice more artistic monsters lurking in the corners of the movie. Director Gareth Edwards revealed in the latest episode of Disney’s official Star Wars Show that the set designers snuck in some Easter eggs referencing his contributions to kaiju cinema.

You can skip to 3:40 if you want to catch the full interview, or read on for the radioactive dinosaur egg.

“There’s some Easter eggs in Saw [Gerrera’s] cave, there’s some cave paintings,” Edwards explained. “One of them is of the creatures that were in my first film, called Monsters. And I think there’s some M.U.T.O.s and Godzilla (opens in new tab) painted somewhere in there. I didn’t ask for it, it’s just they did it as a joke. And I came in one day and spotted it, it was like during the middle of a take.”

Don’t expect this to be a teaser of a Star Wars/Godzilla crossover or anything, just a fun homage to the last movie Edwards directed. Though I would quite like to see Godzilla get into a fight with a detachment of AT-ATs. Who needs a tow cable when you have a mighty tail and atomic breath?

Directed by Gareth Edwards and starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, and Mads Mikkelsen, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is released in the UK on December 15 and the US on December 16.
