Aquaman director James Wan talks Batman v Superman backlash

For reasons which have been discussed and debated ad nauseam, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (opens in new tab) left a lot of critics and audiences unsatisfied back when it was released in March. Instead of getting people excited for DC on film, many felt it was a step backward for the burgeoning superhero universe. For his part, Aquaman director James Wan isn’t letting the negative feedback bother him…

“I think it’s a world that is so difficult to control”, Wan told Bad Taste (opens in new tab). “And always, expectations of fans are just out of this world, right? No pun intended. And I know how it is to make Conjuring 2, just knowing how much expectation there is from the first movie. And I think you do the best you can, and just tell the best story you can”.

Having called the shots on Furious 7, Wan is no stranger to big movie making and the expectations that come with it. Furthermore, while Batman v Superman introduced audiences to Jason Momoa’s Aquaman in underwhelming fashion, everything we’ve heard about Wan’s standalone movie (opens in new tab) has been encouraging. DC have a host of amazing characters at their disposal, and I’m still intrigued to see what stories filmmakers such as Wan and Suicide Squad (opens in new tab)‘s David Ayer want to tell with them.

Directed by Zack Snyder and starring Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher, Justice League: Part 1 is currently scheduled for a November 17, 2017 release.
